Learn that Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), a member of the Senate Health Committee, is the top recipient of pharmaceutical cash. Sen. Hatch has received $1.5 million from drug manufacturers since 1989. Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) has collected more money from health insurers than all other current members of Congress.

The chairman of the Senate Finance Committee that is playing a crucial role in health reform is Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.). Critics of the administration’s public option proposal have donated $3.1 million to Baucus since 1989.

Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and Sen. President Obama has outlined eight principles for health reform, seeking to address not only the millions of people who lack health insurance, but also rising health care costs and lack of quality. In Congress, a number of comprehensive reform proposals have been announced as the debate proceeds over how to overhaul the health care system.

The Kaiser Family Foundation provides an interactive side-by-side comparison of the leading comprehensive reform proposals across a number of key characteristics and plan components.

Included in this side-by-side are proposals for moving toward universal coverage that have been put forward by the President and Members of Congress. In an effort to capture the most important proposals, Kaiser has included those that have been formally introduced as legislation as well as those that have been offered as draft proposals or as policy options.

This side-by-side comparison offers a summary of the major components of these proposals; detailed descriptions of provisions relating to the Medicare and Medicaid programs can be found online. It will be regularly updated to reflect changes in the proposals and to incorporate major new proposals as they are announced.
